Workmen have today begun boarding up windows at the Women’s Rest Centre in Cronulla.
Last week Sutherland Shire Council adopted a resolution that would see the centre demolished and replaced with a temporary children’s playground.
A council spokesperson said that technically, the plan for the Women’s Rest Centre is not part of the master plan, just a point of the resolution adopted by the council.
While the draft Cronulla Public Domain Masterplan will be on public exhibition from 1 August for a period of 28 days, for comment, the council moved swiftly to shut the centre.
On Tuesday afternoon workmen were seen boarding up windows with plywood while inside furniture was dismantled.
The decision has been slammed by parents with many taking to the Leader Facebook page to vent their frustrations.
Jacqui Hansen wrote ‘’So sad. It was a valuable resource when my kids were babies. A clean bathroom for me and a place to change nappies. Plus a small play area. So sad future generations of young mums won't enjoy this resource.’’
Bianca Glendinning agreed.
‘’Sounds like the Council isn't listening to the needs of the community or being at best respectful. Why does everything have to always get bigger and better. A shame.’’
Susan Harris was also upset about the announcement.
‘’So sad and angry about this. With more and more visitors enjoying this beautiful suburb why would you close such a useful facility?’’
