A delicate operation is currently underway to remove a collapsed crane from an apartment block in Wolli Creek.
The crane is believed to have been in the process of being set up on Sunday when it fell backwards, slamming into the penthouse apartment in Brodie Spark Drive and causing structural damage to the upper levels and roof of the building.
Since then engineers have spent countless hours formulating a plan to remove the crane without causing further damage.
Probuild NSW Managing Director Nick Gaudry spoke at the site on Friday and said the operation to remove the crane would be set over two days.
‘’For the last week we’ve had two priorities- the safe recovery of the tower crane and the welfare of the residents who have been affected by this incident,’’ he said.
‘’In the last week we have done significant planning and enabling works and have included the establishment of supporting beams in the basement car park which will be used to support the mobile cranes that you see on the road today.’’
He said four mobile cranes would be used to remove the larger crane.
That includes a 500 tonne mobile crane which will support the top of the tower crane.
A second 400 tonne mobile crane will support the base, the third 350 tonne mobile crane will support the rear deck that is sitting on the building.
The fourth will support the rigging base.
He said the crane will be off the building today with the lower section removed tomorrow.
He said residents would return by midday Sunday.
He said investigations are ongoing into how the incident happened.
