Forget the school bell.
The sound of a V8 engine greeted students at Gymea Bay Public School today.
The Mobil 1 HSV Racing Team stopped in at the school ahead of the next round of the Supercars Championship, being held at Sydney’s Eastern Creek this weekend.
The visit gave students the chance to look at two supercars, meet the team’s drivers, and also learn more about road safety. Drivers James Courtney and Scott Pye took part in a Q&A session while the team’s engineers gave pupils a run down about the technology behind the machines.
Gymea Bay Public School principal Michelle Michael said the visit was a tremendous glimpse into the future for the students.
“With projections that 70 per cent of future jobs will be STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) related, an interest and exposure to activities that demonstrate real-life applications of STEM are essential for young people,” Ms Michael said.
“From the soft, compound tyres requirements to the polycarbonate windscreens, the racing cars on display represent feats of pure scientific, computer and engineering genius.”
Mobil 1 HSV Racing, also known as Walkinshaw Racing, has won seven Bathurst 1000 races and the overall championship six times.
