Kogarah’s main strip has always been a competitive market for local cafes with more than 10 cafes all within five minutes walking distance of each other.
The likes of Montgomery Street Cafe, Cafe Memento, Culture Bean, The Coffee Club, Kay Geez, Pulse Espresso, Crostinis and Kaimaki have been mainstays in the town centre, each offering something a little different from the other.
Ethos Coffee and Stay Handsome Espresso are relative newcomers to Kogarah opening in the past couple of years but they have also made their mark. And in the past few weeks more changes have taken place with an established cafe changing hands and two new cafes opening.
Kaimaki has undergone a change of owners for the first time in 17 years.
Former owner Nick Georgopoulos has sold the business to the operators of Culture Bean who now run the popular cafe.
And the emergence of Platform One Espresso and The Lunchroom has added even more choice for those employed in Kogarah and those just visiting.
Opened five weeks ago, Platform One Espresso has made the most of its location just a minute from the train station.
The cafe is open for breakfast and lunch, offering your traditional poached eggs for brekkie, a burger for lunch and of course, great coffee.
“It was our passion for coffee as well as doing something of our own”, co-owners, Mithat Uluc and Yianni Epanomatis said of the venture.
“Our regulars are like family and we pride ourselves on providing good specialty coffee and a great experience for customers”.
The Lunchroom opened in Montgomery Street two weeks ago and as the name suggests they hope to offer Kogarah workers an alternative place to have lunch each day.
“We see ourselves as not just a cafe, but more as an eatery for the whole community”, co-owner Fiorella Galadi said.
The Lunchroom boasts nothing over $15 on their bistro-style menu.
“A good lunch doesn't need to cost as much as dinner out, does it?” their Facebook states. “Good food doesn't need complicating.”
The Lunchroom offers all-day breakfast and lunch options.
