This year’s Southside Malibu Club spring classic on September 9 is all about history – the golden years of longboarding with Jackson Surfboards and the people that worked there from 1957 to 1967.
The classic “Log Division” is being named after sponsor John Pavett from Swimmart who passed away this year.
The club has been running for 33 years and holds their monthly club competitions on the first Sunday of the month. Each year they hold an open competition for surfers and clubs from anywhere to join in a day of fun and friendly competition at the North Cronulla Alley.
All competitors get a bag of goodies and a t-shirt and category winners are presented with hand-made trophies. There are prizes and a raffle that includes a longboard made by club sponsor Carverley and donations from Willet Johnson Partners, the Luggage House Caringbah and Ocean Art Photography.
Food is provided by Great Southern Smokers. Merchandise is from FOX, CARVE, Surfection Mosman, HYA YOGA and more. Other sponsors are SWIMART, Digitype Australasia, Vanimo Surf Lodge and IMB Shire Banking.
Along with the normal open and junior categories, competition is fiercest in the weight for age, old farts and barnacles age groups.

After the storms the sun must shine,and that's what happened this week after last weekend's big blow.Conditions were almost unrideable with the big stormy south swell but on Monday that all changed and surfers have been spoilt with classic head high conditions.
Swellnet predicts conditions today should see small 3ft residual swell with light offshore winds and an afternoon Nor easter, ahead of early light winds Thursday morning tending fresh Southerly throughout the day as a new front pushes up the coast.
Building South swells are possible after lunch on Thursday but average quality, favouring Wanda beachies late afternoon with sets around 4ft with Friday the pick of the week with Sou Westerly winds and head high waves.
On the world qualifying tour Elouera’s terrible trio are in the middle of European contest mayhem.
Jared Hickel,Shane Campbell and Harrison Martin have just finished the Men's QS 1,500 Grande Plage, Lacanau Pro-it wasnt a bad start with everyone making the 4th round-leaving Shane the highest ranked local at 70th .
They are now at the QS1,500 Pro Anglet that starts today. The first two editions of this comp were major successes with incredible conditions and this year they had to open the doors a little wider and let 144 men in, as well as 64 women.
Headlining the comp are Championship Tour athletes Joan Duru and local hero Pauline Ado, both surfers will lead the pack and hope to put on a good show for their home crowds.
From August to October, aspiring pro surfers flock from all corners of the globe to the European coastline for an exciting leg of 7 events that culminates with the 6000 Qualifying Tour contests of Pull&Bear Pantin Classic Galicia Pro and the Azores Airline Pro-before the real World Tour surfers get to work.
In Pacitan, Java/Indonesia - Indonesian prodigy Rio Waida has taken out the 2017 Hello Pacitan Pro World Surf League (QS) 1,000 event in pumping waves at Watu Karung in East Java. In it’s first year as a WSL event, Watu Karung didn’t disappoint with intense barreling 3-to-6 foot waves on offer throughout the competition window.
In a day dominated by the youngest competitors in the field Waida came up against 15-year-old Swedish surfer Kian Martin in the epic final matchup. After a phenomenal performance in the semifinal, Martin was unable to get a in a groove while Waida dropped excellent scores from the get go.
