Tradies Gymea was a buzz of story ideas and plot lines on Saturday when it hosted the Writers Unleashed Festival.
Now in its 8th year, the event attracted 130 participants who were inspired by the authors’ presentations in three rooms running continually through the day.
Professional editor consultations with editors from Penguin Random House, Pantera Press and Scholastic were fully booked throughout the day.
Children’s authors, Sandy Fussell, Deb Abela, Geoffrey McSkimming and Sue Whiting spoke on topics ranging from how to develop an online author’s platform, publishing indi, to a masterclass in writing Picture Books.
The Australian crime writer Gabrielle Lord revealed her experience in writing the Conspiracy 365 Series, while Amanda Hampson provided techniques in writing historical fiction.
The panel of editors divulged publishing tips and author Holly Throsby chatted about her book Goodwood.
The Writers Unleashed Picture Book Writing Awards were announced to an eager audience following 189 entries.
A local author’s panel showcased the success of the local region.
Young adult writers Felicity Pulman and Sarah Ayoub, expanded on ideas and characterisation while editor Cathie Tasker revealed key points in editing the structure of your manuscript.
Festival Director, Julianne Miles-Brown, said writers who attended the day “networked, gained friendships, related their experiences and drew on ideas from other emerging writers”.
“The day proved successful and beneficial to all those who attended,” Julianne said. “And the committee look forward to next year’s festival”.
