I would like to give a very public thank you to the Sutherland Council Mayor, Councillor Camelo Pesce.
Recently I raised with him the matter that the ‘Highfield’ sign which was formerly located on the small park to the left on the corner of Denman Street and The Kingsway as you enter the Caringbah shopping strip, had not been returned after Council had refurbished the small park some years ago.
In a very short space of time the Mayor followed up my inquiry and forwarded to me this picture showing the new sign that is prominently displayed in the Highfield Park.
It also indicated the original involvement of the Lions Club.
This small park bears the name “Highfield” which is part of our local history.
I understand that the Caringbah area was originally known as Highfield and that The Sutherland Hospital, Caringbah stands on the area that was originally called Highfield.
When a new support committee for the Sutherland Hospital was being formed in 1986, the committee took the name Highfield as it was synonymously associated with the area long before the hospital was built.
The area was originally referred to as the ‘high fields’ where the hospital now sits which differed from the ‘low fields’ where the fire station is located at the old ‘five ways’ – a simple local description!
Thank your Mayor Pesce for listening and more importantly for following up to preserve and maintain the identify of this small part of our local history.

Dodgy calls for both sides
Re the article “Officiating was disgraceful: Flanno” (Leader, September 13).
I am a tragic Sharks fan. You cannot make as many errors, complete at less that 80%, miss tackles and expect to win. There were dodgy calls for both sides.
