Zach Senter created his own piece of history last week in becoming the first local to win the Hurstville Junior Open.
The 16-year-old from Peakhurst, who plays off a handicap of 2, blitzed the field at Hurstville Golf Club shooting two under par on his way to securing the title last Monday.
The annual single-day, Jack Newton Junior Golf event has been running since 2007, with Senter the first Hurstville member to take home the trophy.
Jacob Cradick, 17, was the net winner, with the 33 marker losing eight shots off his handicap after shooting a seven under net 63.
Assistant professional at Hurstville, Paul Skinner, described Senter’s round as some of the best golf played at the venue. High praise, given the club hosts an annual pro-am event, with the course record at five under.
“Zach’s score is an exceptional score around here,” Skinner said.
“Five under is the best ever score here in a tournament round. And to have a local boy win the tournament is obviously quite rare.”
Senter showed his dedication to golf last year when he took it upon himself to organise a Hurstville junior pennants team.
The team made it all the way to the Sydney Metropolitan Junior Pennant final in their first year where they were beaten by Moore Park at The Lakes Golf Club.
This year’s competition starts on Sunday, with Hurstville to host division two matches.
The hosts will take on NSW Golf Club, Woolooware meet Moore Park and Cronulla face Eastlake.
