Matt Jones has stormed back onto the US PGA Tour thanks to a blistering finish to the Web.com season in the early hours of Tuesday morning (AEDT).
Jones began the final round of the Web.com Tour Championship event in Florida in 47th place on the standings, with the top 25 players earning PGA Tour cards for next season.
The 37-year-old from Cronulla rose 30 places during his final round 67 which saw him tie for fifth in the tournament and finish 17th in the overall standings which will see Jones return to the top tier after losing his rights in 2016.
The 2015 Australian Open champion and one-time winner on the PGA Tour shot four consecutive rounds in the 60s to leave him seven shots behind the winner, Jonathon Byrd of the US.
Jones was forced to skip defending his Australian Open title last year as he battled to win back his PGA Tour playing rights, with the start of the Web.com’s wrap-around season conflicting with the Australian Open dates.
The decision now looks to have been a good one, with Jones back on the 2017-18 PGA Tour, with the season to start at the Safeway Open in California on Friday (AEDT).
