Engadine Musical Society is bringing glitz, glamour and all that jazz to the Engadine Community Centre this month with their production of Chicago.
Chicago concludes a blockbuster year for the society and follows their highly successful seasons of Grease and Shrek Jnr.
Premiering in 1975 and the hit of the 1997 Broadway season in a production that originated at City Center's Encore! series, Chicago won six Tony Awards including Best Revival and later, the Academy Award as Best Picture of the Year.
In roaring twenties Chicago, Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband Amos to take the rap ... until he finds out he's been dumped and turns on Roxie.
Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “merry murderess” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the American Dream - fame, fortune, and acquittal.
This sharp edged satire features a dazzling score that sparked immortal staging by Bob Fosse.
Since Rob Marshall’s 2002 film adaptation, Chicago has been a highly sought after production for community theatre companies.
The show features all the magic and drama of the film and musical director Josh Ransom has ensured the production includes everyone’s favourite musical numbers, All that Jazz, Roxie and Razzle Dazzle.
However, audiences can expect much more than a simple replication of the film.
Engadine Musical Society has gathered an experienced production team led by shire theatre veteran, Sue Bunt.
Ms Bunt promises that audiences will be blown away by the production values and talent of the cast.
Leading the cast are Lizzy Cross and Kate Xouris in the roles of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly.
They are supported by a wealth of experience and talent with Tanya Boyle playing Mama Morton and Lachlan O’Brien portraying Billy Flynn.
Chicago is known for its quintessential Fosse style, and Craig Nhobb’s choreography promises to amaze audiences.
The work of Fosse is incredibly demanding and Mr Nhobbs believes that he has the best troupe of dancers to recreate and reimagine the Fosse style.
“I have been lucky enough to have assembled the most talented group of dancers I have ever worked with in an amateur theatre setting,” Mr Nhobbs said.
Chicago will be performed at the Engadine Community Centre until October 29.
Tickets are $38 for Adults. Concession $33.
