Former Socceroos captain Pat Hughes – who also had a stint coaching the Sutherland Sharks – has died aged 78.
Hughes was born and bred in Scotland and moved to Australia as a young adult joining APIA. He started out as a forward but made a name for himself as a competitive midfielder.
Hughes made 13 appearances for the Socceroos between 1965 and 1967 and captained the team on seven occasions.
Sutherland Sharks president Paul Smith said he also coached the club for at least one season in 1976.
Hughes died earlier this week.
Hughes is survived by his wife Patricia, sons Steven and David, daughter Michelle, and grandchildren Lachlan, Bronte, Ainsley, Tegan and Mackenzie.
