He promised to clean up the council and make residents take pride in their community and now new Georges River Council mayor Kevin Greene has shown he means business.
Last week, Mr Greene started his campaign to tidy up the region by rallying the troops to support Graffiti Removal Day, to be held on Sunday, October 29.
It was all in keeping with the theme of this year’s Graffiti Removal Day which is Love Where We Live.
Mr Greene was joined by Hurstville Rotary, Hurstville Scouts and council staff to get to work, highlighting a notorious graffiti hot spot at South Hurstville.
To deliver and promote Graffiti Removal Day, the NSW Government has partnered with Graffiti Removal Australia Incorporated, a not-for-profit community association run by Rotarians.
This year’s event will be run with support from a wide range of organisations including Rotary, Scouts Australia, Girl Guides NSW and ACT, Air Force Cadets, Australian Men’s Shed Association (NSW Branch), Police Citizens and Youth Clubs, NSW Police, high schools and local councils.
Graffiti Removal Day is sponsored by NSW Government, Dulux, Selleys and Smart Graffiti.
Rotary Clubs are working with the council, high schools, property owners, government agencies, community groups, businesses and other members of the public to identify, remove and prevent graffiti.
Clubs or individuals can get involved by volunteering to help at a clean-up site or by nominating a site.
“Hurstville Rotary and Hurstville Scouts are committed to combating graffiti,” Hurstville Rotary’s Jan Gartrell said.
“Last year across NSW over 1500 volunteers removed more than 20,500 square-metres of graffiti from 460 sites. We hope this year will be even bigger and better.
“We would encourage everyone to get involved in the fight against graffiti by volunteering on Sunday, October 29,” Ms Gartrell said.
People who volunteer to help out on the day will be supplied with free cleaning material, paint, safety equipment and training on how to safely remove graffiti.
They can register or suggest a clean-up site by completing a form at www.graffitiremovalday.org.au.
Those who cannot make on the Day can still support this great event by promoting it on Facebook, Instagram Twitter and Snapchat using the hastags#GRD17 and #LoveWhereWeLive.
Volunteers are encouraged to contact Ms Gartrell on 0412 828 871.
