Marist Catholic College Penshurst students are holding their first Girls’ Night In event to help beat breast cancer and to remember a much-loved, art teacher.
More than 80 students will attend the Girls’ Night In event being held on Friday, October 27.
The students will dress in pink clothing and participate in fun activities such as karaoke and trivia at the school.
Having only become a co-ed school in 2015, the Girls’ Night In event will also celebrate female empowerment and awareness of women's health at the school.
Marist Catholic College health and physical education teacher Nicole Katrib said she had been part of Girls’ Night In events at other schools which raise money for Cancer Council NSW.
Ms Katrib joined the team at Marist this year and decided to bring the event with her.
“This will be my sixth year hosting a Girls’ Night In for Cancer Council NSW and the first year that it will take place at Marist Catholic College.
“I am really excited about the students having the opportunity to together get behind the cause.
“The event also coincides with the one year anniversary of a much loved staff member, Mary Beretov, who passed away from breast cancer this time last year.
“The community are rallying behind this event to show their support. Many local businesses have provided prizes and services for the mega raffle that will also be taking place on the night.”
She said they hoped to raise around $2000 from the event. Money goes towards Cancer Council NSW.
Cancer Council NSW community programs co-ordinator for Southern Sydney region Alex Koukoumas said: “In the South Eastern Sydney region alone, it is estimated that approximately 774 people will be diagnosed with breast or a gynaecological cancer in a single year, with around 173 deaths expected.”
