The Woolworths Surfer Groms Comp presented by Wahu saw a day of impressive performances in less than ideal conditions at North Cronulla beach as event two on the series wrapped up in tiny one-foot surf.
South Cronulla’s Kash Brown was the winner with the biggest grin as he took out the u10 boys title from believe it or not, Ocean Lancaster from Merewether, and he was chaired up the beach by his Cronulla Boardriders buddies.
Clubmate Kalani Van de Polder then put up a valiant fight in the u14’s, but fell short of toppling Taj Simon from Port Kembla by a 0.5 margin and took the runner-up spot after dominating all weekend.
Evie Fisher from Gymea Bay showed fighting promise finishing a close second in the u10 girls.
With almost 800 children set to take part in the 2017/18 event series its regarded as one of the major stepping stones in the development of young Australian surfers.
The 10-event Woolworths Surfer Groms Comps caters for surfers from Under 8 to Under 14 and is held in New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, Western Australia ,Tasmania and South Australia over summer.
The winners of the Under 14 divisions from each event will also receive an invite to attend an all-expenses paid, three-day Woolworths Surf Camp at the Kingscliff Hurley Surfing Australia High-Performance Centre.
Previous champions include Matt Banting, Jacob Willcox, Luke Hynd, Chris Zaffis,Ellie-Jean Coffey, Macy Callaghan, Isabella Nichols and Holly Wawn
The Cronulla beaches have been very average this week with a mix of small swells and variable winds just keeping things ticking over-The weekend was very average and so far this week only the early has been worth the surf.
Swellnet predicts this 2/3ft Variable swell to swing to the Nor East and slowly build all week; with Friday morning the pick of an average bunch.
This mornings waves were already wind affected at 6am and the swell had definitely swung around to the NEast.
It also looks like an ordinary weekend of waves ahead, with no major new swells on the horizon-welcome to Summer!
Well the DP Battle Royale was run and won last weekend and without any info I think Cronulla’s Shane Campbell came away with the top prize-I cant find any results but I found some pics on the Fairfax web that proclaimed Shane the winner.
Let me know if I’m wrong.
