As part of the 2017 Discovery Festival of Community Arts, the St George Art Society will host its annual major event, the 73rd Members’ Annual Art Awards evening on Friday, November 3.
The presentation evening is a focal point of the art calendar in the Georges River and Bayside council areas and officially opens the popular weekend art show.
The champagne supper charity function will be held at the heritage Kogarah School of Arts, Queens Avenue, Kogarah, from 7pm.
Life members of SGAS, Myrle King and Ros Psakis, met in 1980 at a local landscape art school run by Gloria Ransom who recommended the two artists join the St George Art Society.
Some 37 years later, Myrle and Ros have remained close friends and are still painting buddies.
Myrle will be 93-years old-on the weekend of this year’s art show and she is avidly interested and involved in the art society’s progress.
“I wanted to learn to paint all my life and when I went through a divorce, I was looking for a distraction and took up oil painting,” Myrle said
Myrle spends more time now knitting for charitable causes such as premature babies and overseas aid and still sees Ros regularly.
“I painted from an early age and when my children were old enough, I was able to start proper art classes and met Myrle,” Ros said.
“Myrle will leave a significant footprint of achievements in the St George area and Sydney local art world.”
This year Myrle has gifted a delightful watercolour still life to become the perpetual prize for the winner of her art show category.
Members have prepared their artworks over the past 12 months with the aim of winning an award in this prestigious exhibition.
Halls will showcase more than 150 artworks presented by 40 artists in a range of mediums from oil, watercolour, acrylic, mixed media and from traditional to contemporary and abstract.
These artworks will be judged by the well-known impressionist oil painter, Kasey Sealy.
It’s a great opportunity to view and buy original, cost effective art of a very high standard.
Exhibitors include professional artists, members of the Royal Art Society and some of the most talented and creative artists in Sydney.
Saturday and Sunday is free entry and open from 10am to 4pm,where visitors can select their People’s Choice award.
At the close on Sunday the winner will be announced together with the winner of the raffle – an oil painting donated by Ros Psakis titled Dappled Light.
The opening night entry of $10 is donated to the fund raising Lamrock Committee of St George Hospital as part of the Art society’s long term community contribution.
