Some of the best fighters out of St George and the Sutherland Shire – including former world champion Sakio Bika – will jump in the ring during an upcoming fight night at The Star.
The Johnny Lewis’ Ultimate Fight Night is being held on Sunday, October 22 at the Sydney venue.
Bika, 38, from Kogarah, will headline the event against Serbian Geard Ajetovic, while the other main bouts feature Rockdale’s Tim Tszyu – son of Australian boxing legend Kostya Tszyu – and Cronulla’s Jack Brubaker.
“I’m looking forward to having my first fight in Sydney since 2009,” Bika (33-7-3) said. “I want to win this fight and my goal is to fight again for the world title.”
His latest victory in July was his first fight in more than two years following a long recovery from a knee injury. The super middleweight said he wanted to make another push for a world title late in his career.
“I had two years off with my knee … but I am injury free now.”
Meanwhile, budding Cronulla boxer Jack Brubaker (13-1) will jump in the ring against Toowoomba’s Kris George (12-1) on Sunday. Brubaker, 25, is looking to climb the rankings and win another welterweight title – with the goal of setting up a fight against fellow Australian Jeff Horn in the near future.
“I feel like I am unbeatable, my body is 100 per cent,” he said. “I feel like I can mix it with the best in the world.”
Brubaker’s only loss to date came early on in his career and he will continue his rise if he is able to beat George. “I have seen a few of his fights,” he said. “He is big and strong but I will worry about myself on the night. I feel like I can beat the best welterweights in the world and I think I’m on another level to this guy.”
Brubaker is a plumber by trade and runs his own boxing gym in Miranda, Brubaker Boxing.
Tszyu (6-0) will return to the ring contesting his first WBC title fight. Tszyu is taking on fellow Australian Wade Ryan (14-5) for the WBC Asia Continental light middleweight title.
The tough southpaw from country NSW won the belt stopping an undefeated Chinese prospect in 2016 and defended the title in Sydney late last year.
The event is being live streamed here.
