Two Sutherland Shire Dragon Boat racers are currently representing Australia at the 13th World Nations Dragon Boat Racing Championships.
Kay Wills and Lorrae Fitzgerald, from Yarrawarrah and Menai respectively, will represent the Australian National Dragon Boat team, the Auroras.
The biennial championships began on October 18 and will wrap up on October 23 in Lake Dianchi in China’s South.
Dragon Boat racers will compete in multiple heats including 200m, 500m, 1km and 2km events, aiming to qualify for the top six final.
Both competitors have been Dragon Boat racing for nine years and were selected for the national team after overcoming several fitness tests, trial camps and open water sessions.
For Wills, it will be her second world championships after competing in Canada in 2015, returning home with one gold and three silver medals.
She trains at the Different Strokes club in Pyrmont under the guidance of elite Dragon Boat coaches.
“To be the best, you need to be coached by the best,” Wills said.
While for Fitzgerald, it is her first world championships after winning gold and silver medals at the Australian championships in Albury, earlier this year.
Fitzgerald trains at the Port Hacking Dragon Boat club.
