Sutherland Shire Council is prepared to sell the public car park adjoining Club Cronulla for the right price and as long as additional public parking is provided in any future development.
Cronulla Bowling and Recreation Club (Club Cronulla) approached the council about buying the car park in Croydon Street for incorporation into a new development on its site.
Minutes of the council’s deliberations in closed session on Monday night have been released.
The council gave in principle support to general manager Scott Phillips to negotiate possible terms for the sale and provision of additional public car parking in the development.
The sale would need to be on commercial terms, and a further report provided to the council.
A previously released report by council staff stated the council had three options:
- Sell the car park on commercial terms.
- Sell for a combination of additional car parking and cash compensation.
- Not sell.
“The sale would result in a significant mixed-use development, further activating Cronulla, attracting more visitors whilst adding to traffic challenges,” the report said.
“The club is able to develop its site without council’s car park, leaving council’s car park isolated and reducing its future value.
“If sold, proceeds will be able to assist fund council’s adopted delivery program and improve its longer term financial position.”
