People are being encouraged to pull on their walking shoes and take part in the 2nd Michael Tynan Memorial Challenge in November.
The challenge was launched by the Tynan family last year to honour well-known Sutherland Shire resident Michael Tynan, who died in early 2016 aged 80.
The inaugural challenge raised over $500,000 for the St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation (SSMRF).
This year’s Michael Tynan Memorial Challenge will feature a walk from Otford to Bundeena on Saturday, November 11. Participants can either take part in the trek through the Royal National Park or complete a driving challenge to raise money for SSMRF.
Mr Tynan was a respected businessman in the shire, having started Tynan Motors, and was heavily involved in the community. He served on the Sutherland Shire Council for almost 20 years and was the president (mayor) from 1975-78 and 1988-89.
Daughter Madeline Tynan, the director of Tynan Motors, said few families were untouched by illness and the challenge was a good chance to remember loved ones.
“This year we are encouraging participants to walk for someone whom medical research could have saved,” she said. “Think of them to remind yourself why you are walking.”
This year the challenge will start at the University of Wollongong for registration and hike from Otford to Bundeena through the Royal National Park.
“Afterwards the participants get to party, beginning with champagne and snacks on the ferry to Cronulla from where the Tynan Motors bus will transport them to headquarters in Miranda for the big bash.”
Ms Tynan said it was a beautiful walk.
“It is a very good bonding day for families, the community and for businesses,” she said.
“Walkers will be fed and [have access to water] all along the route – it is fun and rewarding because you know you are helping.”
The drive is also a fun event on offer this year as part of the challenge, with many stopping points to test the participants including blending their own wine.
The challenge is being generously supported by many local institutions and businesses. Ms Tynan thanked them for their support.
