Waratah Athletics Track at Sutherland has been badly dug up by what is understood to be a stolen car, which was abandoned after it rolled.
Part of the fencing around the Sutherland Shire Council sports ground was removed to allow the vehicle on to the park.
Police are investigating the vandalism, which occurred on Wednesday night.
Mayor Carmelo Pesce said it was “the work of mindless vandal who have no regard for others”.
Cr Pesce said the cost of repairs for the council and community would be thousands of dollars.
“We will work as quickly as we can to get this field back in working order so our Little Athletics can take the track on Saturday," he said.
”Council will have a team working to repair the site on Friday, where new soil will be applied and turf reinstated in the damaged areas.”
“We will keep our community informed on the progress of these repairs.
Police are also urging anyone with information about the incident to contact Sutherland Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
