New restaurants pop up all the time - but few continue to serve diners after 10 years let alone three decades.
Raya Thai Engadine is one of those few restaurants to stand the test of time reaching a major milestone this year.
The restaurant celebrated its 30th anniversary on October 17 with a special event featuring Elvis impersonator David Cazalet.
Raya Thai has come a long way from humble beginnings.
Owner Dedi, along with his siblings Harry and Nali, moved to Australia from Indonesia in 1984 and saw an opportunity to open up an Indonesian and Thai restaurant.
They launched an Indonesian restaurant called ’Gajah Mada’ at Paddington in 1984, before closing in 1988.
In the same year, they took the opportunity to move to Engadine.
That year, along with the help of Dedi’s wife, Irwan, they branched out to infuse Thai flavours, which quickly sent them on their way to success.
So much so that they saw the opportunity to expand and open up a restaurant in Helensburgh which they did in 2001 - Raya Thai Helensburgh.
Early this year Dedi and Irwan gave Raya Thai Engadine a refit and refined the menu to ensure the restaurant remains at the top of its game.
Raya Thai offers a broad menu of traditional Thai and Indonesian dishes and also Asian fusion dishes.
