Almost 1000 people are expected to attend Georges River Council’s inaugural White Ribbon Walk on next Friday, November 24.
The event, which will commence from Kogarah Park, is aimed at raising awareness of domestic violence across all cultures, socio-economic backgrounds and ages not just in the local area, but nation-wide.
Emceeing the walk will be White Ribbon Ambassador and self-defence instructor Chris Futcher Coles.
Georges River Council is also proud to have a number of special guests attending the event including Federal and State Members of Parliament, NSW Police representatives, local businesses, community and sporting groups and schools.
To register for Council’s White Ribbon Walk, visit www.georgesriver.nsw.gov.au.
In addition to the inaugural White Ribbon Walk, and as part of a wider campaign to raise awareness of domestic violence in Australia, Georges River Council will once again be supporting the Through Conversations Over Coffee project.
This project will see local cafes and restaurants use specially designed coffee cups, which all have artwork with important messages printed on them about the effects domestic violence has on people.
The messages on the coffee cups also encourage people to not only speak up against domestic violence, but also to seek help.
As part of this initiative, Georges River Council is working with the St George Domestic Violence Committee, Bayside Council and Sutherland Shire Council to promote these messages and to create a community which supports and helps those affected by domestic violence.
