There will be a familiar face gracing the cover of the 2018 NSW Firefighters Calendar with Sutherland Shire firey Cameron Simpson taking a starring role.
The Gymea resident isn’t the only local heating up the pages with Cronulla resident Jeff Lay, 53, also featuring.
The annual calendar was established in 1993 and raises money for the Children’s Hospital Foundation, Westmead Children’s Hospital Burns unit, Starlight Children’s Foundation, Royal Far West, Mates4Mates, and Australian Zoo Wildlife Warriors.
This year the cute factor has been ramped up with a special animal calendar featuring native animals from Australia Zoo.
It will be the fifth time Cronulla resident Jeff Lay, 53, has taken part. He said helping kids in need gave him a sense of purpose.
‘’My continued involvement has been a direct result of the many hospital visits we make each year that enable us to see first-hand where our donations go to improving treatment and services for these unfortunate children,’’ he said.
‘’Every visit we see at least one child who warms our heart with an infectious smile or heartfelt positive outlook despite their personal circumstances.’’
Getting in shape is a gruelling process that starts months out from the photo shoot.
‘’Several months out I start to dial in the diet and intensify the training to be able to remain competitive amongst an ever growing number of much younger firefighters,’’ he said.
‘’I have recently turned 53, which is twice the age of many of these guys, so the physical challenge also inspires me to keep going.’’
It will be the third time taking part for Cameron, who admits he sometimes gets recognised by fans of the calendar.
‘’There’s been a few times where I’ve been recognised from the calendar when I’ve been out and about,’’ he said.
‘’I really love meeting and talking to our amazing followers, it’s through them that we are able to raise so much money for the amazing charities that we support.’’
Mr Lay and Mr Simpson will be selling calendars at Cronulla Mall on December 16 and 23.
