On-demand minibuses, which took to Sutherland Shire streets on Sunday, have no restrictions within the zone in which they operate.
The mostly blue and white coloured vehicles, which seat 11 passengers, will pick up and drop off at any address, public transport hub or shopping centre.
The four zones are Gymea, Caringbah, Sylvania and Jannali West.
Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Arts Centre director Belinda Hanrahan said it was “a great initiative”.
“For so many people, transport can be an inhibitor,” she said.
“These vehicles can drive into our car park and drop passengers right at the door, whereas buses have to park on the street.
“It’s a really agile way for people to get out and about and visit places like Hazelhurst, and it’s also reasonably priced.”
The service is named Transdev Link by the private bus company, which was awarded the state government contract.
Transdev general manager on demand transport, Yvette Mihelic, said it was “a fast, easy and direct way to connect you from your home to bus and train stations, doctor or shopping centres”.
”Our vehicles have been customised to provide a premium service and superior customer experience,” she said.
“They are fully accessible, carry up to a maximum of 11 customers at any one time and feature free WiFI and USB points.”
“There’s also no timetable – this is transport when you want it, at a time convenient to you.
“You can book a trip from one month to one hour ahead of when you need it.”
Bookings can be made via the Transdev Link app, at transdevlink.com.au or by calling 1800 835 465.
“Once a booking is confirmed, we’ll then provide you with a 10 minute pick up time slot and a maximum 30 minute journey time guarantee,” Ms Mihelic said.
Transdev Link services will operate Monday to Friday between 7am and 7pm and variable times on the weekend depending upon the service area.
Fares are a flat fee of $2.60 for adults, and $1.30 for concession card holders, payable by credit card online or cash to the driver, who is called a “journey maker”.
