Conservation group, the National Parks Association (NPA) celebrated its 60th anniversary with a dinner at Kogarah.
More than 70 members of the association attended the function at the Excelsior restaurant on Thursday evening last week.
Master of Ceremonies was long-time president of the Southern Sydney Branch of the association, Brian Everingham.
Guest speaker was Bob Carr, who was the Minister for the Environment in the Wran government and, later, Premier of NSW, senator and Foreign Minister.
The association said in a statement Mr Carr spoke of the support the NPA gave in influencing governments to establish and protect national parks in NSW over the last 60 years.
“Current concerns include the local issue of loss of wetlands if the F6 motorway is constructed,” the statement said.
“While the loss of a slice of the Royal National Park has supposedly been abandoned, the NPA remains vigilant in ensuring that this icon in our region is protected.
NPA has 16 branches throughout NSW, assisted by dedicated volunteers, the association’s website says.
Branches differ in the types of activities and functions they fulfill, which may include:
- Providing a range of bushwalking and other outdoor activities for all ages and levels of fitness.
- Campaigning on key issues in their local area.
- Co-ordinating bush regeneration, clean up and survey activities.
