Anyone visiting the Cubby House Turners and Woodies at Oyster Bay last week could have been forgiven for thinking they had stumbled into Santa’s cave.
In fact, the array of colourful toys was the result of the skill and craftsmanship of the Turners and Woodies who have been working hard all year to bring some Christmas cheer to shire children.
The members have been working at their headquarters in Como Road, Oyster Bay to make toys for children who may have gone without this Christmas.
Last Friday it was time for the Turners and Woodies to distribute hundreds of new toys to local charities.
This year the toys will go to Orana, Dandelion Support Group, Jannali Neighbourhood Aid, Engadine Conference Centre, Shire Live and Seachange Jannali and Carss Park.
“A total of 666 toys were made by our members and painted by their wives,” Cubby House Turners and Woodies vice-president Keith Moses said.
“This included toy trains, tractors, carousels, doll beds with dolls, pencil cases with pencils and colouring books, spinning tops and much more.”
While giving away hundreds of new toys to local charities, the Turners and Woodies also received a gift of their own for all their efforts.
Miranda MP Eleni Petinos visited to present them with a cheque for $10,000 which will buy a dust extractor unit to make working conditions more comfortable while they work away at their Oyster Bay workshop.
And they will be needing it sooner rather than later.
“We have already started work on next year’s Christmas toys,” Keith said.
“We do other projects during the year as well, but every couple of months we have a week of making toys.”
The Cubby House Turners and Woodies are looking for new members.
