Sutherland Shire Symphony Orchestra has attracted world-renowned international soloist Terry Lam to feature in its latest concert.
Hands Across the Sea will play at the Sutherland Entertainment Centre on December 10, with Lam flying in from Hong Kong specifically to perform Beethoven's Piano Concerto No.2.
It is a coup for the orchestra to secure Lam who has had a distinguished international career as a soloist, opera repetiteur and accompanist having performed throughout Australia, Europe and Asia.
Lam completed a Bachelor of Music degree with first class honours in piano performance at the Australian National University School of Music, under the tuition of Arnan Wiesel. During his studies, Lam performed in masterclasses given by the late Geoffrey Tozer, Jean-Paul Sevilla and Geoffrey Lancaster.
He was the recipient of the Ken and Vera Fowler Honours Scholarship and the Winifred Burston Memorial Prize for most outstanding piano student. Lam later attained his Master of Music Studies in répétiteur at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he studied under Dr. Stephen Mould and Dr. Anthony Clarke, and received the Geoffrey Parsons Australian Scholarship.
As well as his performing career, Lam has recently been appointed an editor at Hong Kong's P & J Music Publishing Ltd. and has a keen interest in conducting. In 2008 he was invited to conduct the 3rd Australian Harp Festival Orchestra accompanying leading harp soloist Alice Giles.
As well as Beethoven, the concert also features one of Mozart's greatest masterpieces, his Symphony No. 25 in G minor. The work is from the Strum und Drang period from the late 18th century and is full of stark contrasts.
Also featuring on the program will be the orchestra's wind ensemble who will perform works by Sousa, Gershwin and Jacob.
The orchestra's musical director and conductor, Dr Clarke, will also give a pre-concert talk at 2pm, with the concert to start at 2.30pm.
