More than 20 Catholic schools across St George and the Sutherland Shire were without many of their teachers this morning during a four-hour strike.
The strike went from 8.30am to 12.30pm and was organised by the Independent Education Union (IEU).
It was part of the IEU’s latest round of industrial action against the Catholic Commission for Employment Relations (CCER), following a series of stop work protests in early November.
Thousands of Catholic school teachers and support staff, who are part of the union, took part in the strike today from about 350 schools across NSW and ACT. T
hat included 23 primary and high schools from the shire and St George region.
IEU secretary John Quessy said the problem related to the employer putting an enterprise agreement to the vote (among employees) without gaining union endorsement. “Our action is sending a clear message that we reject their enterprise agreement,” Mr Quessy said.
Sydney Catholic Schools said while many schools were effected no schools closed during the strike.
