With the new Supported Independent Living facilities, residents in The Disability Trust’s Sydney Region are now happier than ever.
“Feedback from residents and their families about the new residential facilities has been very pleasing to hear,” says Katharine Carney, executive manager at The Disability Trust.
Loraine Hedges, the mother of Adam, one of The Disability Trust’s new residents, sums up her feelings about her son’s recent move.
“At the beginning of the process of finding a home, Adam was not interested in the idea of moving out, primarily because he had been living in the same family home for almost 40 years.
“This remained consistent during the build, and he only went to visit the construction site once, briefly for five minutes.
“Once the build was completed, I talked Adam into having a look at what would eventually be his new home. Adam looked around and was clearly impressed.
“From this point forward, Adam was happy to move and I have not been able to get him back to visit the family home since!
“Even when I was moving home, Adam refused to return home to spend one last night in his old room, despite being born in this house and having the same bedroom for 40 years.
“From my point of view, Adam’s transition could not have gone better. Adam is very happy, comfortable and settled in his new home.”

Such a positive transition is fortunately a common occurrence for people moving into The Disability Trust’s residential facilities.
Katharine says, “At the new units in Loftus, residents are extremely proud of their units and are delighted to explain that the common areas are also part of their home.”
Adam added, “This is part of our place too and we can come here any time.”
Katharine continued, “The Disability Trust also opened beautiful new units in Caringbah which represents considerable work undertaken by families in the region over a long period and is a credit to their advocacy efforts.
“At another new residential facility in Bass Hill positive interactions between the staff and residents is evident and the caring approach taken to their relatively recent transition from metro residences has been a great accomplishment for staff and clients alike.
“It is great when the residents and families express such a deep appreciation for our staff and management teams.
“We have worked very hard at The Disability Trust throughout Sydney to develop a really positive culture and environment within our homes.”
