Winola Su simply loves lending a hand.
Kogarah High School principal Julie Ross jumped at the chance to put Winola’s name forward when nominations were opened this year for a top award – given to students across NSW who help their community.
As a result, Winola has won a John Lincoln Youth Community Service Award alongside 25 other top students in NSW. She was given a trophy and certificate for her efforts.
She received her award from NSW Governor David Hurley during a ceremony in Sydney.
Winola takes plenty of time out to raise money for charities and run groups at her school and outside of school.
The Year 11 student organises charity and school events throughout the year including for White Ribbon Day, Cancer Council and R U OK? Day.
She is a buddy for the Year 7 early start program, helps with the breakfast club and assists students through the school’s support department.
Outside of school, she also serves as a youth community member for the Arncliffe Youth Project and as an anti-racism campaigner with Georges River Council.
Order of Australia Association (NSW) branch chairman John Archer congratulated Winola.
“Winola is one of 26 high school students recognised today to have selflessly volunteered their time to a wide range of organisations and for many very worthy causes while busily preparing for their HSC,” Mr Archer said.
“She has contributed beyond the norm and her actions have inspired her fellow students. She is a beacon of inspiration for others to follow.”
The award was initiated by the late Dr John Lincoln in 1992.
