An unbeaten 83-run partnership between St George-Sutherland Slayers pair Nicola Carey and Rene Farrell helped Sydney Thunder to an 11-run win over the Melbourne Renegades in the opening round of the women’s Big Bash League.
The third installment of the competition started with a double header at North Sydney Oval on Saturday, with the Thunder smashing 6-200 against the Renegades. Carey blasted 47 not out from just 17 balls which included nine fours and a six, while Farrell chipped in with 25 from just 13 balls.
Farrell (2-44) and Carey (1-29) both picked up wickets against Melbourne but didn’t have as good a day on Sunday.
The Thunder were pipped by the Sydney Sixes in their round two match after the Thunder made 6-142, with Carey making five not out.
The Sixes reached the total with eight balls to spare and six wickets in hand to secure wins in both their opening matches. Farrell went wicketless while Carey took 1-28.
