More than 500 students have taken part in Sutherland Hockey Club’s annual summer schools competition.
The eight-week program, regarded as one of the largest school hockey competitions in Australia, was made up of teams of junior and senior primary and high school students from schools across the St George district and Sutherland Shire.
The competition has been run by the club for more than 30 years after it was originally set up by the late Kevin Connelly OAM, a Sutho life member. Fellow life members John Cowan and Peter Krepp ran this year’s competition.
There was also an appearance from Sutho first grade players Kieran Govers and Jack Hayes at the presentation.
The pair, who were selected in an Australian development squad and helped Sutho to their seventh Sydney Hockey Association first grade premiership earlier this year, handed out medals and put on a demonstration for the children.
Next year is shaping up to be an ever bigger one for the club, who are also planning to replace their 14-year-old synthetic surface at the end of the 2018 season.
