Summer arrived in a spectacular way at the Hazelhurst Regional Gallery and Art Centre this week with the unveiling of a larger than life mural in the foyer.
Called Everyone likes ice cream, the mural is the work of Gymea artist Marc Etherington who has been a three-times finalist in the Archibald Prize.
Marc only started painting ten years ago and works at Hazelhurst preparing the gallery’s exhibition spaces for new shows.
He has described his style of art as child-like and puts it down to the fact that he is self-taught.
His latest work evolved when the gallery wanted something colourful for summer to greet visitors.
“I was allowed to do anything I like,” Marc said.
“It is the representation of a fish tank. It’s got an ice cream shop inside and there are ghouls buying ice cream and riding fish.
“I like to have a bit of humour in my work.
“It is something colourful and good for summer, with a tropical vibe. It’s for the young and the young-at-heart.”
The mural took Marc almost three days to complete, assisted by his wife, Kate, who is a ceramicist.
It will be on display at Hazelhurst for about six to eight weeks before it gets painted over.
Given Marc’s previous record as a finalist in the Archibald, the gallery may live to regret it.
“I’m a preparator at the gallery and I will probably have to scrap it off,” he said.
