The winners of Georges River Council’s inaugural Christmas Lights Competition were announced last night by mayor Kevin Greene.
“The inaugural competition was held to recognise and celebrate the many residents and businesses throughout the Georges River area that brighten up our streets with their dazzling Christmas light displays that create a warm festive spirit in our community,” Georges River mayor Kevin Greene said.
“This was a fantastic way to get into the Christmas spirit and to help create a fun and festive atmosphere for everyone in the Georges River area.”
The winners attended a special presentation at the Dragon Room at Georges River Council’s Administration Centre last night.
Winners were announced for the Best Residential Christmas Lights Display for each ward across the local government area, along with a best overall winner.
The council also awarded a winner for the Best Business Christmas Lights Display within the local area.
The winners for Council’s first Christmas Lights Competition are:
Overall Residential Christmas Lights Display
Mr Salvatore Sellitto for his house in Souter Street, Kogarah Bay.
Best Business Christmas Lights Display
Mrs Diana Stojanovska’s Poveli Deli Café on Frederick Street, Oatley.
Blakehurst Ward
Mrs Lidija Vasilevski, Currawang Street, Carss Park
Hurstville Ward
Mr John Kovacevic, Hodge Street, Hurstville
Kogarah Bay Ward
Mr Salvatore Sellitto, Souter Street, Kogarah Bay
Peakhurst Ward
Mrs Vicky Digiglio, Rainbow Parade, Peakhurst Heights
Judging took place on the evenings of December 11 and 12. The judging panel consisted of Councillors, Council’s Director Community and Culture, Youth Advisory Committee members Maria An and Soaliha Iqbal and Council’s 2017 Citizen of the Year, Ms Natalie Esdaile-Watts.
“Overall, 18 entries were received by the council, which was a great effort for the inaugural event,” Cr Greene said.
“Unfortunately, the Mortdale Ward was not represented with any residential entries. However, this did not deter other Wards, who provided ample sparkling lights that attracted many residents for an inspection of their spectacular displays.
“Georges River Council would like to thank everyone who participated in this year’s Christmas Lights Competition and for helping bring the festive spirit to the Georges River area.
“Council would also like to thank the judges for putting in their time to view all the entries.”
