It appears it’s not just us humans who need a well-earned break at this time of the year.
A goanna (monitor lizard) was captured on video enjoying a nice, long yawn as it relaxed on a tree branch at Wattamolla in Royal National Park over Christmas-New Year.
Travel blogger Greg Tannos, of Illawong, posted the video on his website findmyaustralia.com
He included similar vision of yawning koala he videoed earlier near Port Lincoln in South Australia, and added a sound track “for a bit of fun”.
Monitor lizards, which have been commonly called goannas since the early days of European settlement in Australia, are a common sight in Royal National Park.
There are more than 25 species of in Australia, varying in size, with some growing to more than two metres in length.
Their lower jaw unhinges, enabling them to devour bigger prey.
Mr Tannos started his website in 2015 “to show off this great country of ours and hopefully inform and give you ideas for your very own Australian adventure”.
He created a chapter on Sutherland Shire in 2017.
