A boat wreckage which has washed up on shore near Boat Harbour, Kurnell will be removed on Tuesday.
Police responded to reports about 1.20pm today following sightings of an overturned boat about 400m off Boat Harbour.
Police confirmed a boat had washed up on shore and “appeared to be old”. No-one was thought to be in the water.
A Sutherland Shire Council spokesperson said the wreckage would be removed on Tuesday.
“Sutherland Shire lifeguards received a radio call today from SurfCom (13Surf) at approximately 1.30pm advising of an overturned boat off Boat Harbour.
“Lifeguards attended and located the lower half (hull) of a damaged boat, approximately 3-4 metres in length, that had washed up on the southern end of Boat Harbour 4WD park.
“There was no suggestion or report of anyone in the water or in distress.
“Sutherland Shire lifeguards have towed the wreckage to a safe area on the beach with the salvaged to take place tomorrow.”
Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopters posted on Twitter about the boat.
“Search at Boat Harbour has located the wreck of an old boat on shore and debris in the water. No indication that persons are in distress. Final sweep of area before clearing.”
Roads and Maritime Services shared some helpful tips with the Leader for people to stay safe while out on the water:
- Check that your boat is in good condition.
- Check that you have all the required safety equipment on board including life jackets. Ensure all safety equipment is in good condition and easily accessible in the event of an emergency and everybody aboard knows its location.
- Make sure you have local boating maps for the waterways you will be using.
- Report your trip. Let someone know where you are going, how many people are on board and when you intend to return.
- Make sure you and your crew know how to handle the boat, especially on the waterway that you’re using. If in doubt, get information from locals or Roads and Maritime.
- Check the weather before you go out. Register for the Maritime Alert system that is based on official weather data.
- Make sure you have sufficient water and fuel for the duration of the trip.
- Go easy on the drink. Waves, wind and weather multiply the effects of alcohol. Far too many boating fatalities involve alcohol.
- If crossing a coastal bar, log on to view live web camera footage for a number of coastal bars in NSW.
- Moorings must be installed correctly and adequately maintained, so that they remain able to secure your vessel in the worst conditions.
- To ensure it remains in good condition, the mooring apparatus must be serviced at least every 12 months, or more frequently if it is subject to specific mooring conditions.
