Sutherland Shire councillor Barry Collier has denied putting his hand up for the Senate vacancy Kristina Keneally is expected to fill for the Labor Party.
A media report on Thursday said Mr Collier, a former state MP for Miranda, had nominated for the causal vacancy following the resignation of Sam Dastyari.
Mr Collier told the Leader the speculation took him by surprise.
“I have not nominated for the Senate vacancy,” he said.
“Nor have I been approached by anyone in the party to apply for it.
“Put simply, I have not nominated, I will not nominate, and I won't be a candidate for the Senate spot.
“The first I knew of my alleged ‘candidacy’ was a report on line when I got home late last night.
“I take the view that Kristina Keneally will be overwhelming endorsed by the Party and she will have my support.
“There’s enough to keep me busy here in the shire.”
Mr Collier retired from State Parliament in 2011, but made a comeback at a 2013 by-election and served until 2015.
