Australia will look to progress to the semi-finals of the under-19s World Cup today but need to get past England in their quarter-final.
Australia finished second in group B after a heavy defeat to India and victories over Zimbabwe and Papua New Guinea while England finished top of group C with an unblemished record, with both sides looking to advance to this weekend’s semi-finals.
Sutherland’s Austin Waugh missed the win over Zimbabwe but returned to the side for the commanding 311-run win over PNG.
The 17-year-old all-rounder made 26 with the bat at almost a run a ball in Australia’s massive total of 8-370. Waugh wasn’t required with the ball but took two catches as Australia rolled PNG for just 59 in reply.
The win was the second biggest ever by runs at an under-19s World Cup with NSW fast bowler Jason Ralston taking 7-15, the best figures by an Australian in a youth one-day international and the best figures by any bowler in an under-19s World Cup.
