NSW Police have urged motorists to slow down this Aust/ralia Day long weekend.
The latest road safety enforcement campaign, Operation Safe Return, was launched on Wednesday.
Operation Safe Return starts at 12.01am on Thursday, January 25 and will conclude at 11.59pm on Sunday, January 29.
Double demerits will be enforced during this period and police will target speeding, seat belt, mobile phone and motorcycle helmet offences.
Last year, 392 people died on NSW roads.
Since January 1, 2018, there have been 27 fatal crashes on NSW roads and 29 people have died.
NSW Police Force Commissioner Catherine Burn said police data showed 12 of the 2018 crashes have involved a vehicle leaving the roadway.
These vehicles have either hit trees, barriers, stationary vehicles or rolled.
Deputy Commissioner Burn said these incidents showed “why we talk about speeding, being distracted, driving when tired, alcohol and drug driving and not wearing seat belts”.
“This weekend is all about getting from A to B and ensuring everyone can make a safe return, and not sacrificing safety in moments of impatience or distraction while driving,” she said.
