Sydney FC will play for the W-League premiership when they host crosstown rivals Western Sydney in the shire on Sunday.
The Sky Blues welcome the Wanderers to Seymour Shaw Park for their second W-League Sydney derby of the season needing to win to put the pressure on table-topping Brisbane.
Sydney are in second place, three points behind the Roar heading into the final round but with an already superior goal difference. Should Brisbane lose to finals-chasing Canberra on Sunday afternoon, three points for Sydney would be enough to see them finish top of the pile.
The Sky Blues secured their finals place with a 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory on Friday night. When the club hosted a W-League match at Miranda last season a big crowd turned out but there is significantly more to play for this time around.
Sydney FC captain Teresa Polias told the Leader her side would be playing to secure the title.
“Last season we played Adelaide there and it was packed to the rafters,” she said.
“A Sydney derby there is going to be a great atmosphere. It’s a huge game for us anyway but also top spot hinges on that as well. Hopefully we get the job done and have a positive end to the season. Our goal is to win, whatever happens after that happens.
“Especially for me being down at Seymour which is pretty much my home area. I can’t wait.”
The St George Football Association junior and former Matilda was hopeful of an even bigger crowd than last year.
“I’m pretty sure a lot of young female players will be there again which is the main thing but of course being a Sydney derby there will be family, friends and supporters of both clubs,” she said.
“It’s a good little pitch, an intimate ground. It has a great atmosphere like you saw last year. I love playing at grounds like Allianz, it’s an amazing stadium and facility. But playing at local suburban grounds like Seymour Shaw has a different buzz about it.”
Sydney downed the Wanderers 3-1 when they met in December and Polias said her side would take plenty from that result.
Kick-off is at 4pm.
