He had already represented NSW in the Australian Outdoor Hockey Championships but when Kian Johnson was selected for the first time to represent his state at the under-13s boys Indoor National Carnival he was ecstatic.
Kian plays for Sutherland Hockey Club and is a South Sydney Hockey Association representative.
The Inaburra School, Bangor student’s success with the state’s outdoor hockey teams was enough for Kian to be appointed NSW captain. They would head into the tournament with winning the gold medal as the only acceptable result.
“It was an honour and privilege to captain my state,” he said.
The team headed into the final day needing two wins out of their remaining three games in Goulburn.
NSW beat Queensland Spurs 4-1 in the first game and followed up with a dominant 5-1 victory over Victoria to win the gold medal before their final match against Queensland Shots.
The game ended in a 6-2 victory, including five goals in the second half.
Kian, from Dolans Bay, recorded three goals in his eight appearances at the tournament and said he was proud of his teammates and what they were able to achieve.
The boys who dominated the tournament comprised of many rural participants with Kian one of the only city boys in the team.
