UPDATE (4.33pm):
Police have confirmed that a man has died as a result of a major accident in Brighton-Le-Sands.
At about 3.30pm, a man aged in his 80s was struck by a Holden utility while crossing the road on General Holmes Drive.
Emergency services personnel attempted to revive the man, but he died at the scene.
Police said the utility driver was uninjured and was taken to St George Hospital for mandatory blood and urine tests.
Police from the St George Police Area Command are on scene.
A crime scene was been established, which will be examined by forensic specialists.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
4.37pm:
There are huge traffic delays in Brighton-Le-Sands following a car and pedestrian accident on Tuesday afternoon.
Motorists heading home after to work should expect significant delays.
The incident occurred at about 3.30pm on General Holmes Drive, near The Grand Parade.
An hour later, traffic is queued up to 8km.
One southbound lane is still closed to traffic.
Transport Management Centre spokeswoman Bronwyn Martin said motorists should expect delays on Tuesday afternoon.
“Traffic is very heavy back along Southern Cross Drive to Gardeners Road at Eastlakes,” she said.
“Motorists are advised to allow plenty of extra travel time, or use Qantas Drive, Airport Drive, Marsh Street and the Princes Highway as an alternative.”
