Sydney Catholic Schools (SCS) will take on the theme ‘Inspiring Spirits and Minds’ for a second year to celebrate Catholic Schools Week in 2018, from Sunday, 4 March to Saturday, 10 March.  Families will be able to see the opportunities available through open days in March. Executive Director of Sydney Catholic Schools, Dr Dan White, said families could view the many educational co-curricular opportunities on offer at open days in March. “Our focus on authentic learning and Catholic social teaching gives students every opportunity to grow and achieve their best, and to pay it forward through engagement with their broader community,” he said. Academically, Sydney Catholic Schools have continued to make their mark. Analysis of the 2017 HSC data shows a record 48 per cent of students at Sydney Catholic schools achieved results in the top two performance bands – 10 percentage points higher than the overall performance of HSC candidates across NSW. SCS is also driving change in the delivery of gifted education with the Newman Selective Gifted Education Program. The holistic program began in 2011 to ensure educational equity for gifted students at primary and secondary schools in the Archdiocese of Sydney. Dr White said many more Sydney Catholic schools plan to deliver the selective program in the coming years. “The Newman program is about ensuring gifted students who attend their local Catholic school are given the opportunity to reach their potential,” he said. “It benefits not only the individual learner but the whole school community, thanks to a strong focus on teacher professional development that our Sydney Catholic Schools system and gifted education experts are proud to guide and support.” Sydney Catholic Schools has also led the development of programs that make use of industry links and best practice to nurture students’ gifts and interests. Sydney’s dynamic Catholic Schools performing Arts (CaSPA) program provides opportunities for all students to develop performance skills and grow in confidence. Secondary students can gain a career edge and nationally recognised vocational qualifications the dedicated vocational college in Burwood and specialised trade training centres.
