Bayside Council recently issued $64,000 in fines to developers for failing to implement sufficient erosion and sediment controls on development sites.
Mayor Bill Saravinovski saids the council is ensuring all construction sites have best practice erosion and sediment controls in place to help to protect local waterways.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s a large scale development or a home renovation it is important to make sure sediment is not ending up in our waterways,” Cr Saravinovski said.
Bayside Council participated in the recent ‘Get the Site Right Campaign targeting erosion and sediment control in large scale developments.
During the campaign the council undertook inspections of 192 construction sites and issued 95 warnings.
Builders and developers were given seven days to undertake corrective works.
Council officers issued $64,000 in fines during the follow up inspections and are monitoring sites for further potential breaches.
Studies have estimated that 18,000 tonnes of sediment wash down the Cook River and into Botany Bay each year.
The month-long compliance campaign saw Bayside Council join forces with the Cooks River Alliance, Georges River Combined Council Committee and the Parramatta River Catchment Groups and Sydney Coastal Councils Group, NSW Environmental Protection AGency, Department of Planning and more than 20 Sydney councils
