Three schools in St George and Sutherland Shire showed big improvements in their literacy and numeracy results.
The schools identified as ‘high gain’ in NAPLAN in 2017 were Lucas Heights Community School (reading) and Woolooware High School (numeracy) and Kogarah High School (numeracy).
They each achieved substantially above average gains in student reading and/or numeracy achievement as students progressed from Year 3 to Year 5 and from Year 7 to Year 9 between 2015 and 2017.
They were among the 39 schools statewide (and among 22 in the greater Sydney metropolitan region) congratulated by the NSW government for having significant student learning growth by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority.
NSW was the top-ranked state in the highest band in spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy in all but one year level. The state placed second in year 3 numeracy, grammar and punctuation.
