A Salt Meats Cheese restaurant is coming to the Commonwealth Bank Building redevelopment in Cronulla.
The family-owned Italian pizza and pasta restaurant group has lodged a development application (DA) for a $316,000 fitout of a restaurant, which will include outdoor tables in Ocean Grove.
The company, on its website, says it is “a purveyor of gourmet Italian produce”
“We’re all about using quality ingredients, re-creating classic Italian dishes with a modern Australian twist: from our infamous Flaming Cheese Wheel Pasta to the indulgent 10 Cheese Pizza,” the website says.
”With four restaurants and one cooking school in Sydney, one restaurant in Surfers Paradise and our food truck in Brisbane, we’re expanding at an exciting pace and innovating along the way.”
Originally based in Alexandria in 2012, the company’s locations include Broadway, Bondi Junction, Circular Quay and Drummoyne.
The Cronulla premises, on ground level of a retail and food precinct, will cater for 100 patrons, all seated.
Proposed hours of operation are 7am to 11pm Monday to Thursday, 7am to midnight on Friday and Saturday and 7am to 10pm on Sunday.
The Plan of Management said a CCTV system would provide surveillance of the interior of the bar as well as the entries and the vicinity of the premises immediately adjacent to the premises.
“Digital recordings from these cameras shall be kept for 30 days and a copy shall be made available to the police or special inspector within 24 hours after receipt of a written request for access to them,” the document said.
“Access shall be immediately granted to view CCTV”.
Development consent was previously given to Sammut Developments for alterations and additions to the heritage building to create a mixed-use development with 11 commercial / retail tenancies, nine apartments and a basement car park.
A heritage impact statement included with the restaurant fitout DA traced the Commonwelth Bank’s history in Cronulla, including photos, mainly from the bank’s archives.
The Commonwealth Bank, which opened in NSW in 1913, had an agency at Cronulla Post Office for 23 years.
A Savings Bank branch was established in Cronulla in 1935 in a vacant leased shop and a year later was converted to a full branch, offering its own savings bank and trading bank facilities.
With the growth in branch business, and the anticipated growth in the area's population with the coming of the railway, the bank decided to build its own premises on the opposite side of the street to the leased premises.
The butcher shop that was on the newly acquired site was demolished to enable the construction of a double storey branch building in the art deco style, which opened in July, 1938.
