St George residents, especially the elderly, are urged to be on the lookout for tradies who are trying to scam people.
Police have issued a public warning after reports tree-loppers were preying on the community.
On March 6, two tree-loppers knocked on the door of a Mortdale man, 88, telling him that his neighbour had complained about over-hanging trees.
The men offered to remove the trees at an inflated price.
Once full payment was received, the tree-loppers claimed there were further tree-related problems caused to neighbouring properties.
The elderly male paid further money for these services.
Police said no neighbours reported any issues with trees in their properties.
They warn the community to remain vigilant when approached by tradesmen quoting for unrequested services.
Tradesmen must provide sufficient credentials, a written contract and receipt.
Suspicious activity should be reported to NSW Fair Trading.
