Cancer Council NSW is hosting an exercise and nutrition project for cancer survivors and their carers, specifically for the Arabic community in St George.
ENRICHing Survivorship is a free group program to be held on March 20 to May 8 at Kogarah.
The 2011 census shows that in the Rockdale area, Arabic, is the second most common language spoken at home, other than English.
The emerging community will benefit from the Arabic-modified version of the program, which offers eight face-to-face sessions led by a dietitian and physiotherapist.
The program introduces people to nutrition advice, involvement in physical activity and information about adjusting to life following cancer treatment.
It was made possible thanks to a grant from South Eastern Sydney Local Health District.
Multicultural health worker and Arabic support group leader, Seham Gerges, said there was a lack of programs in the area.
“Cancer survivors from Arabic background need support to change their lifestyle habits and this program will improve dietary behaviours and promote physical activity among cancer survivors and families,” she said.
