Bayside Council will establish an Anti-Hooning Taskforce committee to combat car and bike hooning in the local government area.
The Anti-Hooning Committee will be chaired by Bayside Council mayor Bill Saravinovski.
The council will request that local MPs, and representatives of the NSW Highway Patrol, St George Local Area Command, Botany Bay Local Area Command and the Roads and Maritime Services also join the committee.
The move was announced by Bayside Council mayor Bill Saravinovski in a mayoral minute at last night’s council meeting.
“The issue of car and bike hooning has been an ongoing problem across Bayside for many years, with many strategies employed over a long period of time to reduce these problems,” Cr Saravinovski said.
“In the past, Rockdale Council established an anti-hooning taskforce with the Rockdale MP with the goal of reducing car and bike hooning and engaging residents on these issues.”
Cr Saravinovski told the meeting that wherever he goes in the lga he hears of problems with car and bike hoons.
He said he had already had preliminary meetings with police about setting up the taskforce.
“Rest assured that this taskforce committee will do whatever we can to get rid of hoons from our city,” he said.
Last year, NSW Police Minister Troy Grant accepted a petition, signed by 10,000 residents and business operators, which was circulated by Rockdale MP Steve Kamper supporting calls for more police, speed cameras, noise measurement equipment and further traffic calming devices on roads such as The Grand Parade, Brighton-Le-Sands, and Wollongong Road, Arncliffe.
