Australia will keep funding planned parenthood agencies overseas despite Nationals backbencher George Christensen saying it is "disgraceful".
The Queensland federal MP told a pro-life rally in Brisbane on Sunday he would ask Treasurer Scott Morrison to funnel future money for an international planned parenthood agency to counselling and other services for young mums.
Mr Christensen said he felt ashamed when he learned his own government had given $9.5 million to the organisation, which he claimed profited from abortions.
"I've got to say that was a disgraceful act. It was a very low point I think for our nation," he said.
But Defence Minister Marise Payne, speaking on behalf of Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, said there were no plans to stop funding sexual and reproductive health programs.
"These services are vital," she told the Senate on Monday.
"We support, through the aid program, the same range of programs available in Australia, subject to the laws of those countries."
Senator Payne said planned parenthood programs were important in getting women out of poverty and into education and the workforce.
Mr Christensen also mobilised the crowd to take action against the state Labor government, which will re-introduce legislation to decriminalise abortion once it receives recommendations from the Law Reform Commission.
Abortions are legal in Western Australian, Victoria, Tasmania, the Northern Territory and the ACT, and legal for some medical reasons in South Australia.
Having an abortion is a criminal offence in NSW and Queensland, although there are some exemptions.
